Genesis 28 records Jacob’s encounter at Bethel — the place he called “the gate of heaven,” where a ladder connected earth to heaven and angels ascended and descended upon it. At the Altar, we stand in that same open heaven, receiving the blessing spoken over Jacob and his descendants.
